Guy Fawkes Night – The 5th of November

Every year, on November 5th, there is a peculiar celebration in England. Not in Scotland.Scotland), Wales ( …Wales) or Northern Ireland (Northern Ireland).

This celebration is called “Guy Fawkes Night” or “Bonfire Night“

It is a somewhat macabre celebration when the English commemorate the capture and execution of a terrorist/traitor named Guy Fawkes in 1605.

Fawkes and his companions tried to fly through the air (blow up) the seat of the English parliament (Houses of Parliament). That’s why we highly doubt that the other parts of the kingdom (kingdomThey treat Guy Fawkes as a criminal, more so than as a failed hero 🙂

Every year the English celebrate that event with fireworks (Fireworks), bonfires (bonfires) and lots of food: roasted potatoes (baked potatoes[USA], jacket potatoes [UK]), sausages (sausages), cakes of all kinds (all types of cakes), caramelized apples (toffee apples), pork wrapped in pastry (sausage rolls) and toasted caramel (toffee).

The bonfire serves three purposes: 1) to provide warmth because it is quite cold in England in November; 2) to bake (to bake) the potatoes and sausages and 3) burn (to burn) a human-sized doll representing Mr. Guy Fawkes.

It’s a night for everyone. Adults: for eating and drinking. Many bring a flask (hip flask) of whisky or brandy (whiskly or brandy) to combat the cold. The children enjoy watching the effigy burn and the fireworks. There are all kinds: rockets (rockets), firecrackers (bangers), flares (Roman candles), pinwheels (Catherine Wheels) and something we couldn’t find to translate. It’s a thin metal thing that you hold in your hand. It has a coating that, when lit, glows and sparks (sparklers). This “firework” is called “sparkler“because it creates a sparkling light.

My memories of the next day are the smell (smell) of gunpowder (gunpowder) and a layer of smoke (smoke) over the entire city of Sheffield, my birthplace (my birthplace). Sometimes the firemen (firemen worked a lot overnight.

Above all, it’s a party (party) for all family and friends (friends). I love Bonfire Night“, more than anything, because the spectacle of the “Fireworks
