Once you start learning English, keeping it to yourself takes time and effort. You want to share the joys of learning a new language with your loved ones or close friends. After all, home is one of the best places to practice your English, as it’s your safe space. If you’re looking for new ways to make learning English a family affair, this article is for you. Here are some ideas to make learning English a fun family activity.

Family movie night in English

With children running around the house or sulking teenagers likely to be a bit restless, watching a movie is a great way to spend quality time as a family. This is especially true when it’s in a different language. Watching a movie together is a good way to get everyone involved in language practice. You can start quickly by keeping the audio in English but switching the subtitles to your language. However, keep both the audio and subtitles in English if you and your loved ones are up for a real challenge.

During the movie, make sure everyone has a pen and paper, a tablet, a laptop, or whatever they prefer, as long as they can take notes. Encourage everyone to write down new words, unclear terminology, and perhaps even English idioms that don’t make sense in your language. After the movie, have a family group discussion about the events and the new vocabulary. The whole group should make a concerted effort to find new English words or ambiguities in the film. This is a great way to build an English vocabulary bank as a family.

Family English Book Club

You can start your own book club if you’re trying to get your family to cut down on screen time! If you have young children who are still learning to read, be sure to get an age-appropriate book and read it aloud to them. Reading to your child in English is great for both of you. After all, you’ll both be exposed to the language.

NOTE: Children are like sponges. It might not seem like it, but they absorb everything they hear and see. Reading to them in English can help them learn the language. It also allows the reader to process language in simple sentences. Furthermore, don’t underestimate how even children’s books can help you develop your vocabulary!

If you have older children, they may appreciate this activity more if they get to read at their own pace and in their own space. Get each family member a copy of the chosen book. After every chapter or two, set aside a day of the week when everyone discusses the story. This is a great way for your children to… Institute and baccalaureate practice reading comprehension and speaking.

One hour of English per day

Another great way to make practicing English a family activity is to set a time each day after work and school when everyone at home speaks only English. To make things more fun, you can have a point system that rewards the person who says the fewest words in your language. The reward doesn’t have to be money; it can be something creative, like choosing where to have dinner on the weekend or which TV channel to watch during dinner.

Talk about different things: you can talk about your day at school, family plans for the summer, or even what you’re having for dinner. Remember not to worry too much about grammar while participating in this activity. It’s about practicing using English at home.

If you have very young children who still have a limited vocabulary, you can help them. Speak to them only in English for a set period of time and use movements and gestures if necessary. Point to things in the house and name them in English. Tell them stories in English and use plenty of gestures and actions. Using your arms, eyes, mouth, and facial expressions means a lot to these little ones.

A family outing (in English)

If you have plans to go out as a family, don’t let that stop you from practicing English together. Wherever you go, you can incorporate some English practice. If you’re going out to eat, you can try to see if the restaurant has an English menu. On the way to the mall, you can play a quick English vocabulary game in the car. This is sure to be a lot of fun not only for the little ones but even for the older members of the family.

Learning a language is more fun when it’s a shared experience. So why not share your English learning journey with your family and friends? These activities can be done anytime, anywhere. They’re a great way not only to practice English but also to spend quality time together as a family.

It’s easy to mix one linguistic structure with another. But it’s all part of the journey, so don’t worry!
