Skills transferable to studies and employment

Trinity’s Integrated Skills in English (ISE) is a current qualification covering four skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) recognized by governments and institutions as a reliable test of English proficiency.

Preparation for the ISE helps develop authentic and transferable communication skills required for academic study and employability, such as synthesizing information, interacting in conversations, and presenting topics of personal interest.

Flexibility and two exam modules

There are two exam modules: Reading & Writing and Speaking & Listening, which, depending on whether you take the exam in a Trinity SELT Center in the United Kingdom, or in a Trinity Registered Examination Centre anywhere in the world, can be taken together or separately, whenever it suits you best.

The evaluation of the Reading & Writing module is carried out under face-to-face supervision in Trinity-registered centers such as EBC Languages.

The evaluation of the Speaking & Listening module can be done in person or online via videoconference at registered centers.

Correspondence with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

ISE competency levels are calibrated according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and are available at five levels:

• ISE Foundation (A2)
• ISE I (B1)
• ISE II (B2)
• ISE III (C1)
• ISE IV (C2)

Features of the essential preparatory course for the ISE exam

• The preparatory course for the ISE lasts 7 weeks.
• Each week, you will complete online tasks, quizzes, and assignments.
• Set aside 8 hours a week for these tasks.
• There are 1.5 hours of live sessions with your teacher each week.
• You organize your time with your teacher.
• There are 8 hours of online work each week.
• You study the course online in our Moodle virtual classroom.
• You study with your teacher using ZOOM.

Reliable test of skills

The Trinity ISE qualifications provide individuals and institutions with reliable proof of proficiency in the four English skills at different levels, from beginner to advanced. They build on research that enables alignment with the CEFR and students’ profiles.

The ISE exams are regulated by Ofqual in the United Kingdom. They are included in the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and aligned with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).

The Trinity ISE A2-C2 exams have been awarded the ALTE Q brand by the Association of Language Testers in Europe, demonstrating that they meet the strictest quality criteria.

Official recognition (ISE and GESE)

• Trinity College London is an international examining institution founded in 1877, recognized by OFQUAL, which offers English certificates listed in the RQF and formally aligned with the CEFR.
• English certificates ISE and GESE are recognised by most educational authorities and by national and regional public administrations.
• The Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) has granted the ISE and GESE certificates the “Q-Mark” for meeting its demanding quality standards (certificates recognized by ALTE).
• The SELT versions of secure ISE and GESE tests are approved by the British Government for use with UKVI visas, residence certificates, and British citizenship (UKVI certificates). They are also recognised by universities in Spain, the EU, the United Kingdom, and worldwide (ISE).
• The ISE certificates are generally recognized by universities to certify the level of English required for Bachelor’s, Master’s, Postgraduate, and Erasmus programs, as well as for ECTS credits.
• Most universities and institutions in the United Kingdom and Ireland recognise ISE certificates for admission, and an increasing number of universities and institutions are doing so in the EU and worldwide. There is an online results verification system for ISE and GESE and recognition consultation (ISE).
• Trinity offers a certificate verification system for universities and institutions on its website.
• A new online tool allows users to send inquiries to Trinity regarding international university recognition of ISE certificates and request Trinity’s direct intervention in recognition.
• GESE is a suitable exam for students at the end of study abroad programs.
