The First Day of School

After deciding to take the plunge and improve his English, Fernando wasted no time. In the previous chapter, we saw how he discovered the EBC Business English course. What caught his attention most was the flexibility of the packages: he could choose between 10, 25, or 50 classes and customize them to him needs. He ultimately opted for the 50-class package, as it seemed the most convenient option. This way, he wouldn’t have to worry about paying for each session, as was the case with other courses, and could focus entirely on learning.

Fernando’s Dilemma

While waiting for his first class, Fernando couldn’t help but reflect on his situation. He had begun to investigate the job offer he had seen advertised, and what he discovered impressed him. The international bank in Madrid operated in English. That meant he would not only need to master financial English, but also be able to navigate a completely English-speaking environment.

On the other hand, his current boss had recently hinted that if he continued working hard, there might be a chance of promotion. But there was a big problem: even at his small local bank, the position required fluency in business English. It wasn’t just a matter of knowing how to translate a technical term; he needed to be able to communicate with international clients and write formal emails flawlessly.

Fernando felt trapped between two paths:

  • Stay at his current bank, where he had the security of a familiar environment and the possibility of a promotion, although he would still have to overcome his lack of confidence with English.
  • Take risks Applying for him dream job was a much more challenging step. he would have to face an interview in English and prove that he was capable of working in a prestigious bank where the predominant language was not him own.

The risk was great, but so was the reward. Fernando knew that, if he wanted to advance in his professional career, mastering English was essential, no matter which path he chose.

The First Day of School

Despite his doubts, Fernando was determined to take the first step, and that day marked the beginning of his first class. Although he was somewhat nervous at first, the friendliness and approachability of his teacher, David, immediately put him at ease. David asked him what he expected from the course and what his main objective was, creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere for conversation.

The Time Problem

Fernando took the opportunity to share his concerns. He explained that, although the classes were online, he was worried about not being able to commit to a fixed schedule due to the unpredictable nature of his work. Last-minute meetings and projects were common, and he feared he wouldn’t be able to keep up with the course.

David listened attentively and gave him the perfect solution: “Don’t worry, Fernando. Classes are flexible. If you need to change the time or day, we’ll arrange it without any problem. The important thing is that you progress at your own pace.”

Fernando felt relieved to hear this. For the first time, he felt he could balance his work responsibilities with his goal of learning English.

A Tailor-Made Course

During the class, Fernando also confided in David his biggest concern: he wanted to improve his financial English, but he also needed to work on other areas such as formal writing, technical vocabulary, and even interview skills. He was also worried about what would happen when his bonus ended.

David explained that he had nothing to worry about: “We can customize the classes to suit your needs. If you later decide to purchase another voucher, we can focus on other areas. From technical and financial English to interview preparation, we work with you to help you achieve your goals.”

Fernando felt more at ease. He was also surprised to discover that EBC Idiomas offered a specific course for interviews in English, something he would undoubtedly need if he decided to apply for the job at the international bank.

A Promising Beginning

Time flew by, and before Fernando knew it, class was over. He had talked more than he expected, and although he made a few mistakes, David always corrected him in a kind and constructive way.

Before saying goodbye, David gave him a preview of what they would start working on in the next class: key vocabulary and common expressions in the world of banking and finance.

“I can’t wait to start the next class,” Fernando said. “I know this is exactly what I need to move forward.”
