Remembering First Class

In the previous chapter, Fernando had his first class Business English with David, his teacher at EBC Idiomas. At first, he felt somewhat insecure. He didn’t know what to expect and was worried he wouldn’t be up to the challenge. However, he soon discovered that the course methodology was flexible and that David was there to guide him every step of the way.

During that first session, Fernando realized his English wasn’t as bad as he thought, but he also understood that business English had its own set of rules and expressions that he needed to master. Even so, David’s patience and practical approach helped him relax. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, he began to see learning as an opportunity to improve his skills and get a little closer to his professional goal.

Now, in his second class, Fernando is ready to move forward. He knows that reading terms from Business English It’s one thing to know, but to use them fluently in a real conversation is quite another. Today you’ll face that challenge and begin practicing the vocabulary you’ll need to advance in your career.

Starting the Second Class

When Fernando logs into the class, David welcomes him with a smile.

“Today we’re going to work on making you more comfortable with business vocabulary and also on how to express yourself more confidently. Remember that, in a professional environment, confidence is key,” David explains.

Fernando nods, feeling a slight knot in his stomach. Although he understands the vocabulary when he reads it, using it in a real conversation is another challenge.

Practicing Key Terms

“Let’s start with some basic terms,” David says. “For example, do you know what M&A) means?”

Fernando frowns for a second before answering.

-Yeah… mergers and acquisitions, mergers and acquisitions.

—Exactly! Now tell me, how would you explain a process of M&A to a coworker in English?

Fernando hesitates and, before starting to speak, says: “Ehhhh… well, it is when… ummm… one company buys… ummm… another…”

David smiles and raises a hand.

— Very good, but try to avoid the “uhh” and “umm.” Instead, take a deep breath and pause for a second before speaking. Confidence isn’t just about what you say, but how you say it.

Fernando nods and tries again.

— M&A refers to the process in which one company acquires or merges with another to expand its market reach or operational capacity.

David claps softly.

— That’s it! You sounded much more confident. Remember, when you’re speaking with business professionals, it’s important to project confidence. If you speak with unnecessary pauses, you might give the impression that you’re unprepared, even if you are.

Discovering Confidence

Fernando realizes something: when he feels confident, he makes fewer mistakes. David gives him some tips to calm his nerves, such as taking deep breaths before speaking and mentally structuring his thoughts before saying them. As the class progresses, Fernando notices that he gradually stops worrying about his mistakes and begins to speak more fluently.

David says:

— Let’s move on to another term.
— Do you know what P&L means?

Fernando takes a deep breath.

— Profit and Loss?

— Exactly. Now, a sentence!

—Every company needs to analyze its P&L statement regularly – he says, more confidently this time.

A New Challenge

Time flies by, and before she knows it, class is over. To her surprise, she wishes she’d had more time, even though she still has a work report to finish. Before closing the session, she schedules another class with David for the following week.

After finishing her report, she checks her email and her heart skips a beat. She’s received an email with the subject: “Scheduled interview”. Her breathing quickens as she opens it. It’s the Madrid company she saw in the ad. The interview will be at the end of the month… and it will be in English.

With her pulse racing, she quickly sends an email to David to tell him the news. She receives a reply soon after. David assures her that in the coming weeks they will focus on preparing her for the interview and will adjust the classes to suit her needs.

Fernando feels nervous, but also motivated. He’s taken a big step and now there’s no going back.

What Will Happen Next?

Fernando has accepted the challenge and there’s no turning back. Now, with the English interview confirmed, he knows that every lesson with David will be crucial to his success.

Will she be able to gain enough confidence to speak fluently in front of the interviewers? Will she remember the key vocabulary at the crucial moment?

Time flies and the pressure mounts. Each session of Business English It’s a new opportunity to improve, but also a reminder of how much is at stake. As you prepare, you’ll experience moments of doubt and minor setbacks, but also breakthroughs and personal victories.

As the interview date approaches, Fernando will have to prove that he is ready to make the professional leap he so desires.

Will she get her dream job?
